Adjei-Kum Construction Works

As construction experts, we understand the issues with effective waste management, hence the construction of biogas digesters system. We are located at Ogbojo, opposite Emmanuel Villa. Biogas has the following benefits; cheaper construction; environmentally friendly; land economy; free fuel; little or no maintenance; prevents cholera outbreaks. We are a technology provider that operates within the rural and urban set ups.

Special Initiative/ Innovation
Biogas Digester System. It is ongoing in all parts of Ghana, particularly in Accra. We would like to work more in the Volta and Northern regions where there seem to be lack of sanitation facilities. Biogas is mixture of methane and carbon dioxide, produced by anaerobic digestion of organic waste matter, used as fuel. The aim is to reduce health problems with regards to the old septic tank and provide renewable energy. When properly constructed, the system can have a life span of over 50 years. Any MMDA that would sign a Memorandum of Understanding with us would partner us. Our outfit intends to contribute to the Challenge by providing technical assistance to the MMDAs to construct Biogas Digesters at reduced price.

African Renewable Energy Technology Limited (ARETech)

ARETech, a private manufacturer/ supplier, is registered under the company code of Ghana. The core objective of the company is the construction of Biogas Digesters to ensure efficient management of liquid waste for households. We generally operate within the urban/peri-urban scope.

Special Initiative/Innovation
Biogas Digester; it is a system that uses liquid waste and any bio degradable materials as raw materials to generate methane gas which can be used as energy for cooking. The waste is not dislodged for over 20 years. The system has a treatment chamber that treats the liquid waste into methane gas. A community digester can serve the whole community without the need to worry about dislodgement. This innovation has given households the comfort of managing their liquid waste. No worry for dislodgement. The methane gas is used in the kitchen to cook to save money. We will contribute to the Challenge by ensuring that there is no dislodgement of liquid waste to save MMDAs the trouble on liquid waste.

Alliance for Development

We are a national NGO that operates within the urban/peri-urban settings. In recognition of the complex nature of sanitation challenges, Alliance for Development provides sanitation services in an integrated manner. Thus for every solution provided, efforts are made to ensure that both primary and secondary causative factors are adequately addressed. The sanitation services we provide are designed to provide value across the complete chain and to ensure maximum benefit for all stakeholders. We work with all stakeholders and other actors and right holders at all levels in the delivery of our work.

Special Initiative/Innovation
Treatment and re-use of waste water (Black and/or Grey Water). In many cases, proper sanitation depends on the availability of clean/usable water for maintaining cleanliness in one form or the other. However, most often than not, the waste water (black and/or grey) produced from our use of fresh potable water is allowed to seep away or flow freely into drains and gutters. As a means of contributing to sanitation, capturing wastewater, treating and re-using again such as flushing toilet, watering plants, washing cars and other non-potable use, can contribute immensely to reducing demand for fresh clean water whiles maintaining high standards of cleanliness in our communities. We intend to introduce technological advances that allow for design, implementation, operation and maintenance of highly efficient (producing both potable and non-potable water), small and comparatively low-cost wastewater treatment systems. This makes it more affordable and acceptable for MMDAs, households and other low-income users.

The system involves having in place the appropriate plumbing and wastewater collection system. Appropriate technology is applied to treat the collected wastewater, which is then discharged as required/designed by the set-up. Hygienic and quality levels and standards must be followed to ensure protection of health and the ecosystem. In case of solid waste, other waste matter generated/obtained (solid matter and gas) are channeled to other useful use. Our strategy inculcates a strong behavioral change education and advocacy to ensure greater and holistic impact.

Our partners include; Tex Styles Ghana Limited, Kasapreko and KAIPTC who have installed and used most of our waste water treatment systems on their premises. These systems are constructed by private companies, some of which have foreign associates, especially the European Union.

Major impacts of this system has been reduction in the volumes of fresh water requirements by these institutions and production of cheap water for non-potable uses. Key lessons derive includes strong maintenance regimes for such systems, adaption and/or inclusion evolving technology to enhance efficiency and at best to incorporate water treatment systems into architectural design at start of project.

Our contribution to the Challenge; we intend to collaborate with MMDAs and assist them to set-up low-cost and integrated waste management systems and structures towards better sanitation within their precincts, contributing towards the protection of the environment and ecosystems. These initiatives will not only positively impact the districts, but also especially will be replicable and scalable throughout the country.

How it works
Food waste or any biodegradable collected is stored for some time, put into the biogas unit and mixed with water. In the process, bacteria feed on the waste under airless (anaerobic) conditions and generates gas. Our Partners are; government, private individuals, educational institutions (public and private) in Accra, Ghana Navy in Takoradi, and KMA. There have been positive responds from clients on the benefits gained compared to the cost. We intend to educate the citizens on how to manage waste sustainably and make savings.

Special Initiative/Innovation
SaniPath Tool- Assessing Public Health Risks from Unsafe Fecal Sludge Management in Poor Urban Neighborhoods. It has been implemented in Accra, Ghana, Vellore, India and Maputo, Mozambique. SaniPath Rapid Assessment Tool is designed to assess risk related to poor sanitation and to help prioritize sanitation investments based on the exposures that have the greatest public health impact. Rapid urbanization has led to a sanitation crisis in low-income urban areas. How can limited public funding best be used to improve sanitation and reduce public health risks? City governments and development partners lack tools to assess the public health risks from poor. The aim of the tool is to increase the evidence base available to sanitation policy makers and implementers in urban communities.

How it works
Data from simple environmental microbiology methods and behavioral surveys are combined to assess the relative exposure to fecal contamination. Relevant exposure pathways include open drains, drinking water, surface waters, public latrines, soils, wastewater-irrigated produce, and floodwater; •The SaniPath Rapid Assessment Tool automatically generates risk profiles (shown below) for each pathway using data entered by the user; •The risk profiles show users which pathways contribute the greatest risk and where interventions may have the greatest impact on reducing exposure to fecal contamination. Our partners are; TREND Group, Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Water Research Institute of CSIR and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. It is being implemented in Accra Metropolitan Area. Our work in Accra has revealed that food is a major pathway at which majority of people are at risk of getting sick due to poor fecal sludge management. We are working with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to mainstream the findings of the study into policy and practice. We intend to partner MMDAs to deploy the SaniPath tool that will assist them identify the pathway of exposure to liquid waste that pose the greatest health risk and what type of sanitation investments can have the biggest impact on reducing public health risk.

Dad and Sons Biogas Construction and Water Harvesting Engineering Limited

We are a private manufacturer/supplier that operates within the rural and urban areas to design and construct waste treatment system using biogas technology for homes and institutions. This system treats waste anaerobically and does not pollute the environment.

Special Initiative / innovation
Onsite Continuous Flow Anaerobic Waste Water Treatment Plant: this has been implemented in a number of places such as Abeka Presbyterian Church, Hweehwee (Kwahu Abetifi), Tema Community 25 (Dr. Brew’s House). This waste water treatment is a treatment system where liquid and solid organic waste goes through primary, secondary and tertiary plants to digest all the waste and give out a clear effluent that meets the discharge levels of EPA.

How it works
It digests the waste and produces biogas and bio fertilizer as by-product. After the digestion, it gives out effluent that has no negative impact on the environment.

Some outcomes/ impacts of the Waste Water Treatment plant are that it has eliminated the frequent pullout of faecal matter at places where we installed. At Hweehwee for example, natives of the town now have access to a modern biogas toilet facility.

By way of contribution to the Challenge, we will construct waste water treatment systems, biogas latrines (in areas of water scarcity) and create awareness about our compact biogas toilet called EAKOBOTS.

Still Waters Biogas Solutions

Still Waters Biogas Solutions is a partnership between four (4) young Ghanaian entrepreneurs. We seek to provide biogas system in our communities, residences, schools, hotels, etc. We basically provide biogas (gas) for domestic use (such as cooking). Biogas is a system obtained from a digester and it is constructed in a circular form like an oven. The organization is a technology provider and its scope is rural and urban.

Special Initiative/ Innovation
Biogas/ biomass production. It can be implemented in schools, hotels, institutions, etc. The program aims to encourage efficient way of energy conservation; do away with open defecation and educate masses on how biogas should be the next way of tackling waste management. A digester is built is a circular form (oven) which has five (5) chambers- where the waste goes (digester); the weak ring (a level at which the gas storage is built); storage gas (where the biomass is stored); cone (where the gas is being connected to both the kitchen and the generator; and it can work for 25-40 years without dislodging). Some young Ghanaian entrepreneurs are partnering with us to start building biogas system for institutions, schools, hotels, etc. The program has made a lot of impact in terms of getting gas for kitchens; there is no more buying of LPG; biogas is forever. The program intends to fight against open defecation and educate people on turning their liquid waste into biogas for domestic use, by way of its contribution to the Sanitation Challenge for Ghana.
